The Ukrainian Treasure
A Historical Documentary
When archaeologist Pauline Asingh was asked to create Moesgaard's exhibition "Rus – The Vikings in the East," she never imagined how politically explosive it would become.
The opening of the exhibition coincided with Russia's invasion of Ukraine, and for both sides, the stories of the Vikings' mighty "Rus empire" are essential. It was the Vikings who founded Kyiv, which, according to Ukrainians, clearly demonstrates their historical ties to the West. Meanwhile, Putin uses the same narrative as an argument that Ukraine has never existed as an independent nation.
In "The Ukrainian Treasure," we follow the creation of the exhibition and learn about the Vikings' journeys and settlements in Ukraine. At the same time, we gain insight into how history is being used as a critical weapon in the war and as the foundation for Putin's dream of a resurrected Russia.
In parallel, we follow museum curator Søren la Cour Jensen on a journey through war-torn Ukraine. Here, he witnesses firsthand how the Russians are systematically attempting to erase Ukrainian history and culture.
